In this story I will demonstrate how to create a stacked column chart and the things to keep in mind when creating a stacked column chart with multiple values. As you read through this story you will understand the steps that one should follow and things to keep in mind.

In Power Bi stacked column chart we can show multiple data by adding multiple values, data series are stacked one on top of other, which is easily comparable based on the length.

Things to keep in mind when creating a stacked column chart:

  1. Title : A short description about the visual.
  2. X-Axis : It defines individual items presented on the data.
  3. Y-Axis : It defines value from lowest to highest intervals.
  4. Bar : It represents total value of each legend.
  5. Legends : It shows categories of the dataset.

I have created two Stacked Column Chart with two distinct scenario and dataset. Here, all the game depends on the type of data you have and the story you want to create to show your insights. Go through both the Stacked Column Chart to understand the story behind them and the type of data used in both.

Follow the steps to create a stacked column chart :

Step 1: Load data Get data > Excel workbook > choose file/ sheet > Load

Step 2 : Add a stacked column chart from the visualization pane.

Step 3 : Taking a look at our data. This is how my data looks : (filtered)

Step 4 : Here, Status shows the 4 scenarios promotion, transfer, attrition, furlough. YQ is created after concatenating Year and Quarter Column, FTE is the number of Full Time Employee.

Step 5 : Select YQ in X axis, FTE in Y axis and Status in legend.

Step 6 : Add Title, arrange Legend, and format visual as per your requirement from visualizations pane.

Finally the stacked column charts looks like this [Applied filter and selected only 2018 Q1, 2018 Q2, 2018 Q3, 2018 Q4] :

Stacked Column Chart Type 1 :

Similarly, I have created another Stacked Column chart.

Data used :

Filters, Visualizations and Fields section :

Stacked Column Chart Type 2 :

So, In this story I have demonstrated two types of commonly used Stacked Column Chart. Go through the steps and your data to understand how you want to create your report.

The first step to create any visual/report is to understand your data well and then assess how you want to present your insights.
